‘MacGuyver’ Movie Still in Development; Director Attached

For those too young to remember, MacGuyver was a hit show on ABC in the mid-80’s that ran for 7 seasons.  Now, many people know the series because of MacGruberWill Forte‘s SNL parody that somehow found its way to becoming a feature film, and a funny one at that.  In fact, it’s one of Jeremy’s favorites, and there have been rumors of a follow up to it, in fact.  However, the original inspiration for MacGruber may be making its way to the big screen, and there is even a director attached to do so.

James Wan has been announced as the man that would bring the character to the big screen after all these years, and for a film that has been in development since 2010, I’m curious as to why it’s happening now.  Wan is the director of the original SAW, and last year’s breakout hit Insidious.  He is hard at work finishing up The Conjuring, and has just announced Insidious Chapter 2.

However, I’m more interested in who they will get to play the titular spy/bomb tech that uses everyday items to diffuse complicated situations using his vast knowledge of physics and other scientific applications.  Surely, no studio will stand behind Richard Dean Anderson, although I think everyone would freak out and see the movie if they did indeed bring him back for the movie.   Since the motivation for the film seems to be pure nostalgia (as the show was never that great, despite the fact that I was a huge fan as a young boy) why not bring back Anderson as the ultimate wink to that fact?

Jared Padalecki played the character’s nephew in a failed pilot for a reboot show nearly 10 years ago, which begs the question, why is this coming back now?  It’s not like there has been a huge resurgence in popularity for the character, but far be it for me to question the wisdom of studio heads.

What do you think?  Would you watch a MacGuyver movie, and if so, who would you want to play the character?
