It took me by surprise when The LEGO Movie ended up being not only a great film, but my current favorite film of 2014. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have a way with taking established properties that sound like awful ideas for films and then somehow making them amazing.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie being their main defenses.
Now, they’re done working on 22 Jump Street, which looks so-so, but will probably be just as hilarious as the first and most thought that they’d return to WB to help work on The LEGO Movie 2, which got announced almost instantly after the first film opened to spectacular numbers.
Word is that they’re not interested in directing and instead handing things over to Chris McKay. McKay was the animation director on The LEGO Movie, which pretty much means that he was director #3, so it’s not like they’ll have to start from scratch or hand things over to someone that doesn’t understand what worked so damn well in the first film.
Normally, I’d be pretty worried and start losing interest quickly, since Lord and Miller have dropped the gig, but this same thing happened with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which I ended up enjoying almost as much as the first film. Sure, Lord and Miller helped produce and write that sequel, but maybe they’ll still help out around the house when it comes to making sure that The LEGO Movie 2 delivers?
I don’t really know, but at least we have one great LEGO movie to marvel over.
Have you seen it yet? Are you ready for a sequel without the same directors returning?
