John Luessenhop‘s direct sequel to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (titled Texas Chainsaw 3D) is happening whether you like it or not. So it is now time to decide if you’re on board for this unneeded 3D sequel or if you’re going to stick with the remake and it’s even better prequel. I’m not exactly sure what to say about Lionsgate’s take on the iconic Leatherface, if only because this new trailer plays out much more like a teaser.
We get brief glimpses of the character and his chainsaw pal, but most of the footage on display is your basic set up, that shows our nameless leads, followed by them getting chased down and killed one by one. The tone feels exactly like the original film and the films that followed, which is good, but nothing about it feels like stuff that we haven’t already seen a dozen times now.
It’s still great seeing someone try their own take on an established character, but the fact that most of this looks like remake stuff is getting me worried. I’m okay with a direct sequel, if it tells us a new story and doesn’t play out exactly like the last two Chainsaw movies, but I’m not okay with a studio re-branding a franchise, adding the 3D for quick bucks and writing it off as a sequel when it is later revealed to be more of a loose remake.
Perhaps I’m over-thinking things?
Texas Chainsaw 3D opens in theaters on January 4th, 2012.
