Well here we have it, after a long three years Kung Fu Panda 2 is here. DreamWorks Animation brings us another movie that has a lot of potential. Personally, I really liked the first Kung Fu Panda when it hit theaters. When it came to the marketing that was being done for this movie, I steered away from the trailers and such because I wasn’t too interested in a second movie. I’m actually really glad I steered clear otherwise I would have known too much and it might have ruined it.
Once again we are following the lovely Kung Fu Dragon Warrior named Po. Along with Po we are given the Furious Five from the first movie; Monkey, Mantis, Viper, Crane and Tigress. Together, they still make up the Furious Five (no clue on why they are not the Furious Six, but whatever). When there are villains who threaten near by villages they are on top of it and defeat them, that is until Lord Shen. Lord Shen is a peacock that is exiled from his royal family because he of the evil things he did to try and take over the throne. Of course, what kind of bad guy would he be if he didn’t want to get revenge. His main plot is not only to take his rightful throne back but to also to take over China.
This was directed by Jennifer Yuh, the same director as the first Kung Fu Panda. We have Jack Black as Po, Angelina Jolie as Tigress, Gary Oldman as Shen, Jackie Chan as Monkey, Seth Rogen as Mantis and Dustin Hoffman as Shifu.
Master Shifu is around to give Po some challenges and tries to teach him how to experience inner peace. However after that he pretty much takes a back seat in this movie. Along with that it seemed Kung Fu Panda 2 was more focused on Po instead of his counterparts. Although Po’s companions, the Furious Five, were traveling with him the entire movie you didn’t see as much of them as you might have expected. Another thing that was kind of saddening was that the movie itself wasn’t as funny as the first one. Don’t get me wrong, it was funny but just not as funny.
Even with the Furious Five and Shifu kind of taking a backseat in the movie, Kung Fu Panda 2 was still an excellent movie. Both writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger did an excellent job on the storyline. If you have seen the first movie you saw Po’s journey to become the Dragon Warrior and with the second one you are pretty much being introduced to his back story. The connection to Po’s back story and the present day dilemma that he faces is awesome. Kung Fu Panda 2 has a lot of heart and it tends to be a lot more character involving than the first.
Should you go and check Kung Fu Panda 2 out!? The simple answer is yes. This movie is defiantly worth the money to go see it in theaters. You will get a wonderful and delightful story as well as some humor. It’s not just a movie for kids, everyone should see it. I found it very refreshing. Between the two movies that are coming out this weekend this movie should get your money instead of The Hangover Part II.
