Just a couple of weeks ago, Edgar Wright tweeted a behind-the-scenes photo of what initially appeared as an unidentifiable actor portraying the titular character in Marvel’s Ant-Man. It was soon revealed that the photo was taken during the production of the test reel footage that premiered at San Diego Comic-Con two years ago. News of the production has been very minimal recently but now Variety reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd are in talks with Marvel for the lead role.

A few days ago, Joseph Gordon-Levitt attempted to shut down the alleged rumor of him being a frontrunner during an interview with the French version of the Huffington Post. However, the Don Jon actor did reveal that he’s in talks. “There is always a lot of rumors around these projects and so far it is still only discussions,” he told the Huffington Post. “I am always very transparent when it comes to my role and my career. I’m usually the first to speak and communicate with my fans if something happens. If you hear nothing from me, they are just rumors. “

It’s not surprising that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks for the role. He was once rumored to be the frontrunner for the titular role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, which will also be part of Phase Three. Gordon-Levitt needs a franchise for himself, he’s just that good. However, I wouldn’t mind to see Paul Rudd have a shot to star in a blockbuster. Marvel is already known for their out-of-left-field casting choices for large roles so the inclusion of Paul Rudd wouldn’t be a far stretch. Also, Edgar Wright is obviously a comedic director so he may be looking for an actor who is also comedic, depending on his approach to the material. Rudd has yet to comment about his involvement with the film.

Ant-Man will begin Marvel’s Phase Three on July 31st, 2015. Make sure to check back for more updates on casting. Who do you think should be Ant-Man?
