Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently directed a film about sex addiction titled Don Jon’s Addiction. The only real comparisons I’ve seen drawn are between Addiction and Shame, but most have said that the two are actually very different beasts, despite the familiar subject matter.
JGL‘s film is having a bit of trouble getting cut down to an R, with JGL himself mentioning that he was always going for an R:
Yes, we expect we have to do that and I’ll be getting started on it as soon as I get back. I think it is important that those images are in there but what precisely you see isn’t that important. What’s important is the rhythm of the film, the repetition of what the Don Jon character does, over and over.
He then goes on about how there are things that you don’t actually see, but are heavily implied, which might be one of the reasons why it’s teetering between the dreadful NC-17 and R.
I’m all for the director’s vision, I just hope JGL doesn’t do too much cutting, leaving us with a shell of what his film used to be.
