Justin Lin shocked us all when he managed to make the best Fast/Furious film of the bunch five films in. Fast Five was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise tired series and it made a lot of people like me interested in the series. Of course with the box office success as well as critical success a sequel was bound to happen, which makes this next bit of news even more exciting!
Fast & Furious 6, the official title for the 6th entry in the series will mark the return of Justin Lin in the director’s chair with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and newcomer to the series Dwayne Johnson all reprising their roles. The film is set for release on May 24th, 2013. Now that’s just a refresher, the real news here is that Twitch is reporting that Jason Statham may be signing on for the sixth film as well as the seventh!
That’s right; Lin might be filming the sixth and seven films back-to-back, which would explain why he suddenly dropped out of Terminator 5. This opens up a few different options for the series. Universal could release the sixth film on schedule without any changes and the seventh later that year, maybe around the holiday season or they can wait it out and release it in 2014. Harry Potter recently had smashing success with the release of Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2 in a monthly time span, so why not give it a go with the most popular car series in film? Even if they don’t go that route, fans would only have to wait a year guaranteed before getting another Fast/Furious fix since the seventh film would be in the bag, or nearing completion by the time the sixth one hits theaters.
Jason Statham is the cherry on top. He’s known for his action films and the sixth film is taking place in Europe, so he’ll fit right in. I wonder if he’ll be playing a good guy or a bad guy. Who cares at this point!
What are your thoughts on Fast & Furious 6 and 7 filming back-to-back? Are you a fan of the series new direction and does the casting choice of Jason Statham bring any joy in your life?
