Those of you who follow along know that I very rarely post about movies, but not only is this movie about a metalhead, it’s something that needs to be seen by everyone. For those of you who are unaware, Jason Becker was at one time considered one of the greatest guitarists on the planet. He most notably played alongside David Lee Roth and Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, as well as releasing a slew of solo albums. Unfortunately, nearly 20 years ago, he was diagnosed with ALS (or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and since become completely paralyzed. Not only is he defying all odds by even being alive right now (the doctors gave him 5 years, tops) he still writes some amazing music, WITH HIS MOTHERFUCKING EYES!
That’s right. With the help of some close friends and scientists, he has developed a system where he can very literally compose and record music using nothing but his eye and chin movements. It is utterly unbelieveable. The story is so heartwarming, so uplifting, and so out of this world that it must be seen to be believed. And damned if it doesn’t put all those first world problems I’ve got into perspective.
But enough rambling. The trailer for the documentary about his remarkable life, Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet, is up and it will give you even more insight into the superhero that is Jason Becker.
As of right now there is no official release date (theatrical or otherwise) aside from a short world premiere run in San Jose, California, at the San Jose Reporatory Theater on March 3rd, and the Camera 12 on March 5th and 9th. If you live in or around the area, get your tickets here. I personally can’t wait until this gets a wider release or makes it to DVD/VOD, whichever happens first.
