James Wan is slowly establishing himself as one of the only horror directors working in the mainstream field that isn’t afraid to scare the living shit out of his audience. He doesn’t really care about budgets or ratings, instead simply relying on good-old fashioned scares and leaving the rest up to the horror fans.
He made Insidious incredibly cheap and damn what a horror flick it was. I’m not usually one for PG-13 horror films, but Insidious impressed me with its scares that were well built and executed almost perfectly. The film loses its footing towards the end, but I was a fan of just how far Wan was willing to go.
Now he’s following it up with The Conjuring, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. This one looks just as scary, with lots of atmosphere presented in this new full-length trailer. I love that Wan isn’t afraid to show off the “money shots” in the trailer, because he almost always has a dozen more better scares waiting for the film’s release.
Timing is everything for a horror film and The Conjuring looks to be slotted at just the right moment, with a July 19th release. It should be able to capitalize on the middle-of-the-summer crowds while also being one of the only real horror films in release at the time.
Another bit of promising news before we get to the trailer is the film’s MPAA rating. Apparently it was recently submitted for a PG-13, because that’s what Wan was shooting for and somehow the MPAA tagged it with an R, stating that it’s just too scary for anything lower. They mentioned that there’s not one moment that stands out, but the entire film being a generally terrifying experience.
Here’s a few quotes:
“When we sent it [to MPAA], they gave us the R-rating. When we asked them why, they basically said, ‘It’s just so scary. [There are] no specific scenes or tone you could take out to get it PG-13.’”
“[Is] a testament to the studio for not f*cking with the film. It works and they are sticking to it and I’m very thankful for that.“
And without further ado here’s the latest trailer for The Conjuring:
