Director James Wan has primarily been known for his work in the horror genre, having directed such films as Saw, Insidious and the recently-released The Conjuring. He knows how to scare audiences just fine, but most are questioning if he knows a damn thing about cars or the action genre for the upcoming Fast & Furious 7, which he has been confirmed to direct.
Most people forget that Wan directed Kevin Bacon in Death Sentence, which is one of my personal favorite revenge flicks. Wan has gone on to say that Fast 7 will be a gritty revenge story, yet still a light and action-packed Fast & Furious entry. He mentioned The French Connection and Death Wish as inspirations.
We’ve also got this quote from him:
I really like the theme of this next one that we’re going with. I can’t really talk about it, but I like the theme; it’s one that I really relate to. Then there’s the drive of Number Seven, which was set up at the end of Number Six, which is a classic revenge story. I’m a big [genre] fan, so that’s how I’m approaching it: I’m looking at it like a gritty, ’70s revenge thriller, but one that still fits into the ‘Fast and Furious’ series.
I think Wan might be the perfect man for the job, especially after reading his plans for the seventh installment in a series that has had its ups and downs.
Fast & Furious 7 is currently scheduled to be released next summer.
