James Mangold Reveals Influences For ‘The Wolverine’

Director James Mangold is mighty impressed with what he’s come up with for The Wolverine. For those not keeping track, this is a direct sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is one of the worst comic book movies of all time. I seriously mean that too.

The Wolverine is slotted for release this July, yet we’ve only seen a few stills and a couple of posters. Mangold recently broke the silence by revealing a list of films that he watched that directly influenced The Wolverine.

Here’s the list:

1. Chungking Express
2. The Outlaw Josey Wales
3. The Samurai Trilogy
4. Floating Weeds
5. Black Narcissus
6. Happy Together
7. 13 Assassins
8. The French Connection
9. Chinatown
10. Shane

So what he’s essentially saying is that The Wolverine is going to be freakin’ awesome. That doesn’t mean much when it’s the director saying it, but that’s still reassuring. We can at the very least expect a more character-driven film, with lots of stunning imagery.

Hugh Jackman will hopefully do a lot of damage once this film hits on July 26th, 2013. Be prepared.
