James Cameron’s film, Avatar, was a box office hit, so a sequel to it is more than expected from the film’s fans. And a third film wouldn’t be out of the question, but a fourth film? Well Cameron has been discussing just that. The Film Stage is reporting that “he’s already got a fourth movie knocking around in his mind,” and they have confirmed that it will still be quite a while before anything really happens- up to a decade even.
MTV reports a recent interview Cameron:
“I have an idea for a fourth. I haven’t really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na’vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world…The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films. It’s a plan.”
Cameron has also been working on the second and third sequels since the first. In fact, he is still in the writing process for both movies. MTV states this is “a daunting process” because he is “writing two scripts together as one big thing.’”
Overall, I am excited to see what comes out of the next Avatar films. I have always been a fan of Cameron’s work. In the interview with MTV, he put it well, explaining that he will have “completed the thematic arc by the end of three” films. This compels me, for I’m a lover of all Sci-Fi collections! Others fear the continuation of the films because they feel it will limit Cameron’s future, and this is a fair statement. I too question this, for the first movie had a closed ending, and it left its viewers content.
