Hugh Jackman To Play Blackbeard In Joe Wright’s ‘Pan’

It looks like Oscar nominated actor Hugh Jackman will be putting the claws away and will be putting on a pirate hat for Warner Bros. Variety reports that the actor is in final negotiations to star as the villainous pirate Blackbeard in Pan, the new adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s classic fairytale.

Joe Wright (Atonement and Anna Karenina) will be directing the film from a script by Jason Fuchs, which just appeared on this year’s Black List. Warner Bros. was apparently in talks with Javier Bardem for the role but he eventually passed on the opportunity. As for the rest of the cast, it appears that the studio approached Ryan Gosling to portray Captain Hook but he turned it down. The studio is looking for an unknown to play the titular role of Peter Pan.

If you’re unfamiliar with the story in which the film is based on, Peter Pan and Captain Hook are actually allies as they team together to fight Blackbeard before Hook becomes Peter’s enemy. Here’s a brief synopsis:

When an orphan is taken to the magical world of Neverland, he becomes a hero to the natives and leads a revolt against the evil pirates.

Pan will arrive in theaters on June 26th, 2015. Make sure to check back for more updates as they come our way. The studio will be making more casting announcements soon.
