Harry Potter Sets Opening Day Record (Friday Box Office)

It probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has set a new opening day record with an impressive $92.1 million dollars, defeating The Twilight Saga: New Moon‘s previous $72.7 million.

HP drew in about $43.5 million on midnight screenings alone, which is just unbelievable. To think that this films midnight launch has earned more money than some movies total domestic run is just insane. I think the midnight number is an early indicator of the latest HP film breaking opening the day record and maybe even opening weekend record, which is currently held by The Dark Knight with $158.4 million.

BoxOfficeMojo is confidently saying that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 will be topping The Dark Knight by the time the weekend is done, but they do mention that this will be a very front loaded film. While these record breaking numbers are impressive I personally am more excited for next week’s numbers. How far will HP drop with the release of Captain America: The First Avenger? Let’s not forget about the counter marketing film here, Friends with Benefits. Both of those films should put a small dent in HP‘s second week, but how big will that dent be?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon made $6.3 million on Friday, which is quite a dip and Horrible Bosses dropped to $5.5 million.

I almost forgot to mention the other opener, Winnie the Pooh, which brought in $2.9 million on Friday. OUCH TOWN POPULATION YOU BRO!

Check back on Monday for the full weekend box office!
