One of the absolute worst films of the year so far is Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. This R-rated load of shit looked like a lot of fun after watching the red band trailer, but Tommy Wirkola‘s film is actually a complete bore, full of shitty CGI and even worse performances by Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton and Peter Stormare. I was actually shocked by how lifeless the film really was. Once the credits finally popped up on screen I was probably one of the first people to dart for the exit.
Anyways, the film did some decent business in the US, despite opening in a somewhat crowded and unorganized January. While the film earned a modest $50 million in the states it went on to make over $150 million worldwide, which means Paramount recently decided to give the sequel the go-ahead, with most of the cast and producers returning, but no real sign of Wirkola just yet.
I find this news troubling, because Hansel & Gretel had no reason turning out as bad as it did and now knowing that a sequel is coming makes me worry for the worst. I guess it can’t be any worse than the original film, but there’s always that chance.
Perhaps Renner will actually stay awake while delivering his lines this time?
