It looks like directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have plans to re-team with actor Steve Carell to make a middle age backpacking story. This time Carell will act only as a producer, with Ficarra and Requa writing and directing. The filmmakers have this to say about the project:
We’re working on something with Steve also, that he’s producing. He’s not starring but it’s based on the idea he had. We wrote the script already. It’s one of these three friends from college, but now they’re in their 40s, movies. They’re going on a European backpacking trip that that they never did. And it’s filled with all this middle-aged fun.
The film will be released under the banner Carousel, which is Carell’s production company that Crazy, Stupid, Love. was released under.
I think it sounds like a good idea. One thing I love about Ficarra and Requa is there range as filmmakers. They’re able to go from a dark comedy like Bad Santa to a more serious drama/comedy like Crazy, Stupid, Love. without any problems. They also had time for the fantastic I Love You Phillip Morris, starring Jim Carrey.
While I prefer their darker stuff like Phillip Morris and Bad Santa, I still do appreciate their more serious work. With Carell attached I’m sure the project will be able to find that perfect balance. The Film Stage mentions this type of project being perfect for a guy like Jason Sudeikis and I couldn’t agree more. His name was the first one that popped up when I was reading the article.
What are your thoughts on the project? Are you a fan of Ficarra/Requa as writers/directors? Do you care for any of Carell’s recent work?
