Consider me intrigued. The Wrap has reported that Girls star Adam Driver is the current frontrunner to play Batman’s crime fighting sidekick Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing, in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel Batman vs. Superman.
Earlier this week, it was initially rumored that Nightwing will have a part in the sequel. Warner Bros. is reportedly looking for an actor that has the look of a “young John Hawkes.” Driver certainly has the unique look that fits the description.
The Wrap also reports that two other actors are in contention for the role but those names haven’t been revealed. The inclusion of Nightwing in the sequel, at least to some capacity without it being overkill, could work. The Batman that Ben Affleck will be portraying in the film is supposedly grizzled, older and world-weary, which fits well with his relationship with Grayson. In the comics, an older Grayson has a falling out with Bruce Wayne, shreds is Robin persona and becomes Nightwing. It’s unknown if this will actually be a storyline in the film. However, it’s the best guess at this point.
I may be in the minority here but I think Driver would be great in the role. He’s a very skilled actor as he’s proven with his performance as Adam on HBO’s hit show Girls. Driver is already working on establishing himself in the world of film. He recently appeared in Noah Baumbach’s masterful film Frances Ha and is set to reunite with the director for the drama While We’re Young opposite Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts. Also on his slate are the romantic comedy The F Word and the dysfunctional family drama This Is Where I Leave You.
Batman vs. Superman (which may be retitled) will arrive in theatres on July 17th, 2015. The film will star Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. Make sure to check back for more updates as they come our way.
