Deadline has reported that Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler is in talks to reunite with Michael B. Jordan for a Rocky spin-off tentatively titled Creed. According to the report, Michael B. Jordan will be playing the grandson of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) who enters the ring against his family’s wishes because of his natural instinct and ability passed down to him. He learns that in order to succeed in the ring, he must need a mentor so he turns to his grandfather’s former rival Rocky Balboa.

That’s right, Sylvester Stallone is set to reprise his role as Rocky Balboa as a retired fighter-turned-mentor. Stallone reportedly loved Coogler’s idea so much that he helped Coogler secure financing from MGM with the original Oscar-winning producers of Rocky back on board. The film is based entirely on a concept developed by Ryan Coogler, who deems Creed as a “dream project.” Coogler intends to tie in Rocky mythology of the first three films to move the story forward.

This is definitely unexpected news. Coogler and Jordan, who are just coming off the breakout financial and critical success of Fruitvale Station (read Jeremy’s review here), are on the rise and this project will surely boost them. It’ll be interesting to see if fans of the Rocky franchise will show their support of the planned continuation. Do you think this is a good idea?
