The Friday box office numbers are in and it looks like Universal’s sequel Pitch Perfect 2 is in the lead, with an estimated $27.8 million, while Mad Max: Fury Road trails in second with an estimated $16.7 million.
Keep in mind that these are just Friday’s numbers, which leaves plenty of room for growth on Saturday and Sunday.
Some are disappointed with Fury Road‘s second place, but you need to remember that Pitch Perfect was a global success and the sequel packs a lot of stars and comes with a much more broad audience, while Fury Road is more of a cult sensation with an R-rating and will most-likely only appeal to action junkies or fans of the original series, which had its last entry all but kill the hype for another Mad Max.
Also, we’re in the hot start of summer, which means that one film doesn’t have to beat the other, instead lets just be happy that both are making successful debuts.
And if you’re still worried, then get out their on Facebook and Twitter and start spreading the Mad Max word. Get your friends and family to go and give it a chance and maybe it’ll make some decent coin for WB and allow filmmakers like George Miller to be even more creative and free with their next films.
