I’ve been remaining fairly optimistic for James Mangold‘s The Wolverine. The director has been talking up his latest film a lot, even comparing it to some all-time classics, but at the end of the day I’ll always remember one of the shittiest films that I’ve ever seen, which happens to be X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Yes, this new film is acting more like its own film and not so much a sequel, but it’s still the same character (played by Hugh Jackman) and it’s being released by the same studio. Sometimes no matter how far you try to go to establish your property as something drastically different you still end up with similar results.
If you don’t believe me then just watch these two new trailers for The Wolverine. Up until this point the marketing has been low-key and character-focused, but now these new trailers do nothing but promote the mindless action, while occasionally trying to tackle some of Wolverine’s inner-demons. I’m worried that these trailers are a clear-cut preview of what’s to come, so for now I think I’ll just keep my distance.
The Wolverine opens on July 26th, 2013.
