Director Juan Antonio Bayona is a powerful visual filmmaker that might not always nail his stories, but he at the very least makes his films look gorgeous.
His latest film, A Monster Calls, features a young boy (Louis MacDougall) dealing with his mother’s illness (Felicity Jones) by entering a fantastical world where a monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) helps him conquer his fears and gain back some courage to live his everyday life.
It sort of reminds me of a more adult-themed and darker version of Steven Spielberg’s The BFG, which was enduring and touching in its own right, but definitely aimed more at the kids crowd.
A Monster Calls definitely looks more like the sort of fantasy film that I’d lock onto, which makes its fall release that much more exciting for me.
