This might be it for a while. Director Steven Soderbergh has gone on record to say that after this and an HBO production about Liberace (with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas) he’s set to retire from filmmaking or take a long hiatus.
His newest film re-teams him with Channing Tatum and Jude Law and also adds Rooney Mara and Catherine Zeta-Jones to the mix. He’s also again working with screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (The Informant!, Contagion). This one runs closer to Contagion than his previous two films Haywire and Magic Mike, but it looks equally impressive.
Side Effects shows us the actual side effects of dealing with dangerous drugs and like most Soderbergh films it looks like it will be doing a bit of location or character jumping. I love the glowish haze the entire trailer has over it and I’m willing to bet Soderbergh has at least one trick up his sleeve that hasn’t been revealed just yet.
I still think the previous title, The Bitter Pill, was a much more intriguing title, but the change is probably going to give the film a wider audience.
Side Effects opens on February 8th, 2013.
