Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley star in the upcoming dramedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Lorene Scafaria is wearing both the writing and directing hats in this one. Her previous work includes writing the screenplay for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, which wasn’t all that great.
I like that the trailer plays more on the drama aspect of the end of the world. Its bleak and depressing comedy feels like a relief. They probably could have taken the easy way out and made the film a straight-up comedy or pure drama, but it seems to be balancing both genres very well.
Steve Carrell impressed me last year in Crazy, Stupid, Love. I didn’t know he could do drama that well. Keira Knightley hasn’t been doing much of anything good since the Pirates series stopped calling her, but I’m confident that she’ll provide the dramatic chops needed for her role.
The film also co-stars Rob Corddry, Connie Britton, Gillian Jacobs and Patton Oswalt.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World opens on June 22nd, 2012.
