The second trailer is out for Rock of Ages, the adaptation of the popular Broadway musical. Written as a goofy ode to 80’s hair ballads and the entire era of silly music, it takes a tongue in cheek approach to the material, and to the music itself. The story is:
“Set in 1987 Los Angeles, Drew and Sherrie are two young people chasing their dreams in the big city. When they meet, it’s love at first sight, though their romance will face a series of challenges.”
They’ve gone intentionally cheesy with this one, hiring director Adam Shankman (the Hairspray remake) to direct the film, so you know what type of approach he’ll take with the material.
The film boasts a lot of talent on screen, besides the much talked about Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough (of Burlesque fame) will co-star, and will feature at least cameos by Will Forte, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Malin Ackerman, and Bryan Cranston. Not exactly the type of cast you would expect for a hair rock opera, but Rock of Ages has had a successful run on Broadway the past few years, including 5 Tony Award nominations for writer Chris D’Arenzio, who collaborated on the script with Justin Theroux (accomplished actor from Mulholland Dr. and Your Highness, also one of the writers of Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2) and Allan Loeb (writer of Things We Lost in the Fire and 21 among other projects). We’ll see if the success of the Broadway show translates to film box office receipts when the movie opens June 15th. See if it interests you at all below:
