Formerly titled Imogene when it premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the upcoming drama/comedy Girl Most Likely features Kristen Wiig in her first leading role since the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids. Directors Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman, the duo behind American Splendor and The Extra Man, are back with a story about a woman coping with change and her mother. The first trailer for the film has arrived online. Check it out below.
Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a New York playwright who, after finding early success, is struggling to become anything beyond yesterday’s news. With both her career and a relationship reaching a halt, a spur-of-the-moment move puts her in the hospital and forces her to move back to New Jersey under the care of her mother (Annette Bening). With her mother’s new boyfriend (Matt Dillon) and a mysterious younger man (Darren Criss) both living in the house, Imogene is forced to cope with the sudden change in her life as well as her turbulent relationship with her mother, all the while trying to find the easiest way out.
I’m personally excited to see Kristen Wiig in another starring role. She was impressive in Bridesmaids. Of course this film isn’t going to be on the same scale as Bridesmaids, but I’m sure the film will display Wiig’s range of talent and assure that she has a chance to have a strong post-Saturday Night Live career. Also, I loved the film American Splendor so I’m glad to see that directors Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman are back. The film itself looks like an entertaining dark comedy.
Girl Most Likely is going to be released in limited theaters on July 19th.
