Director Zack Snyder made a giant splash on the world when he adapted 300 from comic book pages to the big screen. Visually, nothing has quite matched up to his blood-soaked swords and sandals flick and I’m actually surprised that WB hasn’t tried to make a sequel out of the film sooner.
Now, 300: Rise of an Empire is coming out — almost seven years after Snyder’s film. He’s returning as a producer and writer, with Noam Murro taking over the directing duties. Honestly, this doesn’t look half as bad as I thought it would, but it still feels like a lesser sequel, full of no names and special effects that just aren’t as popping as the original.
I’ll see the film and I’ll go in with low expectations, but I’m doubting that it tops the original, if only because the original was nearly perfect and has no need for a sequel, prequel or whatever the hell this is.
300: Rise of an Empire opens on March 7th, 2013.
