This weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival, the latest film from director Richard Ayoade (Submarine) titled The Double premieres. The film is based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novella and stars Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg as Simon, a man who is driven insane by the appearance of his doppelganger. Check out the trailer below.
Simon (Jesse Eisenberg) is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite — confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.
I absolutely loved Ayoade’s charming coming of age film Submarine. I’ve been looking forward to another film from him ever since. Judging from the brief trailer, The Double looks like it’s going to be a moody and stylistically charged thriller.
The film co-stars Mia Wasikowska, Noah Taylor, Yasmin Paige, Cathy Moriarty, Wallace Shawn, and James Fox. An official release date hasn’t been set. What do you think?
