I distinctly remember sitting in the dark theater as the end credits of Drive started to roll. I was blown away from what I’ve just witnessed on the screen. It’s a beautiful film full of carnage and artistry courtesy of Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, wowed both the audience and critics. Shortly after the film’s release, it was announced that Gosling and Refn were set to collaborate once more for a boxing crime/drama titled Only God Forgives. Not much has been revealed about the Thailand-set film besides an official still (as seen above), a synopsis, and a promise that it’s going to be violent. Earlier today, the first poster for the film has popped up online and it features a battered and almost unrecognizable Ryan Gosling.
Official synopsis (courtesy of The Film Stage)-
Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.
Only God Forgives is set to release in Denmark on April 4th, 2013. We can assume that the film will be released in the U.S. shortly after.
