Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, David Lowery’s Text-set crime drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints has been receiving a lot of praise. To build even more buzz, IFC has released an impressive first trailer and poster for the film festival favorite. Check them out below.
Bob Muldoon (Casey Affleck) and Ruth Guthrie (Rooney Mara), an impassioned young outlaw couple on an extended crime spree, are finally apprehended by lawmen after a shootout in the Texas hills. Although Ruth wounds a local officer, Bob takes the blame. But four years later, Bob escapes from prison and sets out to find Ruth and their daughter, born during his incarceration.
Set against the backdrop of 1970’s Texas Hill Country, director David Lowery paints a poetic picture, evoking the mythology of westerns and saturating the dramatic space with an aching sense of loss. Ain’t Them Bodies Saints is a story of love, motherhood and searching for peace while faced with an unrelenting past.
If you’re not familiar with director David Lowery, he directed the 2009 feature St. Nick and the award winning short film The Pioneers. The impressive trailer for Ain’t Them Bodies Saints hints that Lowery may be a director to keep an eye on.
IFC will be releasing the film in theaters on August 16th and VOD on August 23rd. The film co-stars Ben Foster, Keith Carradine, and Nate Parker. I have a feeling that this is bound to draw comparisons to Terrence Malick‘s 1973 classic Badlands. What do you think of the trailer?
