First Look Trailer For ‘Spiral: From The Book Of Saw’

Who else remembers that awesome feeling when October hit and you knew it was time for another Saw film? I know most horror films have a bad reputation (for whatever reason) and even the Saw films were wrongly classified as torture-porn, despite featuring very little nudity and despite the fact that most of the violence had clear motive.

I always loved the Saw series because it was able to intertwine a good story with the blood and gore — it wasn’t a franchise focused on jump scares or pointless violence, but instead tried teaching a twisted lesson to those within the films.

Yes, the later installments sort of stretched that philosophy and even became slightly repetitive and predictable, but I still hold the Saw films up highly as one of the rare horror franchises that actually “got it”.

Lionsgate recently tried to reboot the franchise with Jigsaw, an okay entry that failed to bring urgency back to the series and kind of just existed among the other films, without being an exact sequel.

Still, the film made money based on its shoe-string budget, which is why Lionsgate is yet again trying to revive the dead franchise.

Also, Chris Rock himself brought an idea to the fold that he offered up to executive produce and star in, alongside Samuel L. Jackson.

The script comes from Jigsaw writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, with Saw veteran director Darren Lynn Bousman stepping in to lead the pack.

This first teaser for Spiral: From the Book of Saw is an interesting one, because it looks similar to the films that we have grown to love, but also drastically different in feel. There is less focus on the traps and more on the murder-mystery, with Rock’s character mentioning cops being targeted for the traps.

Will this film fall in line with the rest of the series? Will Tobin Bell make a return? Is this a reboot, a sequel or just something else entirely?

I can’t wait to find out when Spiral opens in theaters this May.
