Only a couple days ago, it was reported that Sony Pictures Classics has picked up Foxcatcher, a new drama from Capote and Moneyball director Bennett Miller. Now, Entertainment Weekly has provided the first official image from the film (pictured above) featuring an aged Carell in prosthetic make-up.
Steve Carell will be portraying John du Pont, a paranoid schizophrenic millionaire who built a wrestling facility on his Pennsylvania estate called Team Foxcatcher. In 1996, du Pont shot and killed Olympic gold medal wrestler David Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) in his home. Sienna Miller will be portraying Schultz’s wife and Channing Tatum will be portraying Schultz’s Olympian wrestling champion brother.
“We just had our first test screening, and not everybody recognized Steve,” Bennett Miller said in a recent statement. “He is aged for the film, and his face is changed, and his physicality changed. If I say I’m going to make a movie about a guy who’s a schizophrenic murderer, there are probably a dozen actors who would immediately appear on anybody’s casting list. And Steve would not be on any of those lists. And that’s a good thing. Because it’s unexpected… John DuPont was a character who nobody thought was capable of doing something as horrible as he did. And I did not want to cast somebody who would feel dangerous in that way.”
Steve Carell is an immensely talented comedic and dramatic actor. He has already proven that he has the dramatic chops in films such as Little Miss Sunshine, Dan In Real Life, and The Way Way Back. It appears from the image alone that he’s stepping further outside the box for Foxcatcher. Perhaps this’ll be the performance that will boost Carell into this year’s Oscar race.
Foxcatcher will be released in limited theaters on December 20th before an expanded release in early 2014. Check back for more updates as they come our way.
