For every The Hunger Games, there’s a Beautiful Creatures. The current craze of young adult adaptations is becoming more of a hit and miss gamble. Even though there are three Hunger Games films on their way within the next couple of years, Hollywood is already seeking a new young adult franchise and bets are currently on the adaptation of James Dasher’s 2010 novel The Maze Runner. The first images from the film have arrived online (courtesy of MTV). Check them out below.
Similar to The Hunger Games, the futuristic society in The Maze Runner is bleak and teenager’s lives are in danger. The film follows a teen by the name of Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) who wakes up in an elevator with no memory leading up to that moment. He soon finds himself in the Glade, a walled-in arena where teens like him are deposited every thirty days. Thomas and the other teens, known as “runners”, soon find themselves trapped in a dangerous maze where they must avoid a devastating fate.
The images aren’t enough to sway me just yet, but the film is still a long ways off. I’ll hold judgment until the inevitable first trailer, which I’m betting will be released shortly before The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in November. The film also stars Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Patricia Clarkson, and Will Poulter.
The Maze Runner arrives in theaters on February 14th, 2014. Do you think this will be a hit or a miss? Post your thoughts below.
