Why is it that I have absolutely no idea who director Harmony Korine is? I’ve heard people going on and on about how they’re either really looking forward to Spring Breakers or how they’ve disliked Korine’s last efforts and could care less about Spring Breakers.
The name rings empty in my brain and I’m trying my hardest to keep it that way until I see Spring Breakers for myself. Then I can possibly go on and look into Korine’s previous works. I like that I have virtually no expectations for Spring Breakers. On one half it looks like a crazy ride with plenty of beautiful women to look at (Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens), plus James Franco playing the whitest gangster in town.
That element of the movie makes it looks over-the-top and hilarious, but this is an Annapurna Pictures production, which is a company known mostly for funding quieter stuff like The Master and Killing Them Softly. This hints at Spring Breakers being much more than a party-heavy robbery piece.
A reflection of today’s youth by way of bikini shots and cornrows? I’ll give it a go.
Spring Breakers is set to open in theaters on March 22nd, 2013.
