Andrew Dominik hasn’t directed a film since the breathtaking western The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which just so happens to be my favorite western of all-time. Dominik is re-teaming with star Brad Pitt for Killing Them Softly, which also stars Ray Liotta, Richard Jenkins, Sam Shepard and James Gandolfini.
The film follows Jackie Cogan (Pitt), who is a hired enforcer that investigates a heist that went down during a poker game. It sounds like a basic plot, but the trailer reveals the intricate details and blunt violence that Cogan uses to get to the bottom of the case. It looks great from a visual approach, with an appropriate use of slow-mo, plus lots of long cuts and crisp shots.
I loved the way Dominik made Jesse James look, because it often resembled a Terrence Malick picture, which is one of the biggest honors you can get. Killing Them Softly looks a lot different, but still pleasing to the eyes.
I’ve been looking forward to this film since it was originally announced and I’ve been following it since it received a title change and most recently got pushed back. I sure hope The Weinstein Company gives the film its proper due, because it looks like a winner.

Is it too early to tell if Killing Them Softly has a chance at the Oscars?
