It’s so weird that Universal can’t seem to nail a director down for their upcoming Fast & Furious 8, despite the later entries proving that there’s still lots of gas left in the tank for this highly bankable series.
Furious 7 director James Wan backed down due to wanting to film The Conjuring 2 more and Fast Five/lots of other Fast/Furious films director Justin Lin is apparently too busy with Star Trek Beyond, which leaves Universal in a tight spot if they want to get this thing in front of cameras soon.
For the record, I’d rather they leave the series alone after the touching and perfectly fine ending that we were left with in Furious 7, but if it has to happen then let’s see what kind of talent that they will attract.
Right now rumors are going around that F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) is being eyed for the part, with previous action films including A Man Apart (an under-rated Vin Diesel revenger) and The Italian Job.
Gray is probably riding high over at Universal thanks to the huge success of Straight Outta Compton, which makes the Fast & Furious franchise an easy enough follow-up, but I’m not sure if I agree with that.
He’s a decent action director at best, but perhaps the already-established series will be just another quick job for him.
Any other ideas for possible directors? Feel free to shout out in the comments section down below.
