Fede Alvarez‘s Evil Dead remake premiered at the SXSW 2013 film festival this past weekend to some mixed reactions. Some critics have claimed that the movie is that rare remake that both adds to the mythos of the original characters and story, while also playing homage to Sam Raimi‘s original.
Others have called it nothing but fan service of the highest order, done with technical perfection, but not much of anything else. Both sides are agreeing that the film is a gore-fest, with lots of great sequences, but the overall effectiveness of the film is ranging from pointless to really fucking good.
I couldn’t be more excited.
I’ve been teetering on this film ever since it was announced, with my initial reactions to the first trailer remaining hopeful, but still keeping my distance. The red band trailer did it for me and ever since then I’ve slowly been building up the anticipation more and more.
I can’t wait to see it come April 5th. I even wrote a little article about five films in April that you should see. Check it out right here.
With the first reactions out of the way, it’s only normal at this point to question a sequel. The director himself revealed in a Q&A that a script is being written for a follow-up. So, if the film does good numbers and the audiences generally likes it I think it’s safe to say that we’ll see Evil Dead 2 in a year or two.
This makes for an interesting time to be an Evil Dead fan, since Sam Raimi said he was working on a script for Evil Dead 4, which would continue his original series.
Two different Evil Dead series’ co-existing at once? Can you handle it?
