Even though the first film kind of sucked and was a letdown I’m still looking forward to The Expendables 2. Mainly because Stallone isn’t directing, which means we might see a coherent film with equally proportioned action scenes and not just Stallone killing dozens while Crews gets put on the back burner until the last epic shotgun massacre.
I really enjoyed the latest Rambo, not because of the story, but because of the fucking action. Rambo personally killed hundreds of people by way of bow, massive knife, bare hands and a huge machine gun. It’s that kind of insane, over the top violence that makes a modern day Stallone action film work. We all know the guy is an old sack of bones who can’t act his way out of a box, so why not just give us a movie featuring him taking on an entire country and winning?
It worked well both in terms of entertainment and box office success. The Expendables sounded like a for sure winner because of its epic cast, but at the same time that is what made the film fall flat. Guys like Schwarzenegger and Willis made very brief appearances while Lundgren was given too much dialogue, leaving only Statham, Stallone and Li to pick up the pieces. The film had too much story and not enough action. When the film picked up in the final minutes it was way too late.
The Expendables 2 will hopefully act as an apology letter. This time Simon West will be directing and in addition to Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Dolph Lundgren we’ll have bigger roles for Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Plus, Liam Hemsworth will be joining the film in addition to past action stars like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris.
Talk about an insane movie! If The Expendables 2 doesn’t make you instantly shit your pants upon viewing then they did something very wrong.
The Expendables 2 opens in theaters on August 17, 2012.
