It was only a short time ago when One Hour Photo and Never Let Me Go director Mark Romanek was set to direct Disney’s live-action reboot of Cinderella. He since then exited the project over creative differences and was replaced by director Kenneth Branagh. After a long search for a young actress to put on the glass slipper, Branagh may have found his Cinderella.
Variety has reported that Emma Watson is in talks to take on the role of Cinderella. The entertainment trade also noted that actresses Imogen Poots, Saoirse Ronan, Alicia Vikander, and Gabriella Wilde were all in contention for the role at one point. If Watson gets the role, she’ll be joining Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett who is set to portray the evil stepmother. It’s been reported that the film will follow suit of Disney’s previous live-action reboots where a classic story is re-tooled for a new generation.
Emma Watson is sure establishing an impressive post-Potter career. She’s already appeared in My Week with Marilyn and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She next appears in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring. If she gets the title role in Cinderella, both Branagh and Disney would have made a promising choice. Cinderella is set to begin production later this year in the fall for a 2014 release.
