Ellen DeGeneres To Host The 86th Academy Awards

It looks like Ellen DeGeneres will be returning to the stage at the Oscars next year. DeGeneres herself announced the news on Friday morning via Twitter that she’ll be hosting the 86th Academy Awards. “It’s official: I’m hosting the #Oscars!” DeGeneres wrote. “I’d like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra.”

It will be DeGeneres’ second time hosting. The Emmy-winning talk show host and actress hosted the 79th Academy Awards back in 2007.

“We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars,” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said. As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together, and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen‘s gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are.”

Ellen DeGeneres is a smart choice. She has already proven to be a great Oscar host and she will most certainly appeal to a wide audience. Last year, host Seth McFarlane captured the attention of young viewers but received harsh critical reviews for his crude but misunderstood sense of humor. McFarlane declined to return to host earlier this year.

“I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say — the third time’s the charm,” DeGeneres said in an official statement.

The 86th Academy Awards will air live on March 2nd, 2014.
