Director Duncan Jones sure had made a name for himself in the world of film. First, he knocked it out of the park with his debut feature, Moon and then he followed it up with a bigger studio project, Source Code, that wasn’t as good as Moon but still managed to be great. Since Moon was released he has been discussing a film he wants to make called Mute, but he just can’t get that project off the ground and it’s really pissing me off. But what’s good about this news is that he is starting on another project that is his “own idea” and “own passion”, but with a “budget to be able to pull it off”. So, like most people, I am very interested!
Moon was my favorite film of 2009 and I really enjoyed Source Code. Both films prove that Jones is one of the best directors currently working today and I can’t wait to see what’s next. While I do hope he gets Mute back on track, I’m not going to complain if he skips it and makes another film. As long as he continues to deliver sci-fi beauties or just beauties in general, I won’t complain.
Jones had this to say about his next project.
“I’ll take a break from sci-fi after this film. Moon was done at a tiny budget and we really squeezed everything we could out of it. Source Code was a chance to work on a bigger budget with name actors, but on a project that wasn’t my own. Hopefully, this third film will be the kind of sci-fi I want to make, on a budget where I can afford to do it as I see it in my head. After that, I’ll change genres.”
This is some pretty big news considering he mentions changing genres after his next film. I personally love sci-fi and obviously Jones knows what he’s doing in the genre, but if he wants to switch then by all means go for it. I’m very curious to see what genre he would tackle next. Possibly a more action oriented film or maybe even a drama?
What would you like to see Duncan Jones direct after his next project?
