As if the rating is the first of our worries. Megan Ellison, current owner of The Terminator rights, has promised fans an R-rated fifth entry in the Terminator series. She told a fan via Twitter.
TheTerminatorFans.com : @meganeellison We hope you can bring this franchise back from the brink of PG-13 HELL!Megan Ellison : @terminatorfans We can’t really tell you guys anything about Terminator BUT it will be an R rated film as God and James Cameron intended.
While I’m glad to hear that the Terminator series will be returning to its R-rated roots, I think the more important question that should have been asked is when will the fifth film even start filming? I know Ellison has X amount of years to release another Terminator film before the rights return to James Cameron, so you’d assume production is going underway soon? Rumor once was that Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to return for this one, but no word on Christian Bale reprising his role as John Connor.
Salvation and T3 are easily the worst of the franchise, sticking out like sore thumbs when compared to the sci-fi classic The Terminator and possibly the best sequel to a film ever, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. T3 was a laughing joke and Salvation was a mediocre sci-fi film that felt less like a Terminator film and more like a generic McG action film. Though, his R-rated director’s cut was a slight improvement over the theatrical release.
Still, the idea of a fifth Terminator film doesn’t sound all that appealing, especially without Cameron involved or someone more worthy of such an epic series.
Does the R rating give you hope? Should they stop making Terminator films and let the rights revert back to James Cameron?
