I always knew Disney would eventually take over the world. They’ve slowly been consuming anything and everything, with the mega-purchase of Marvel a few years back and now /Film is confirming the purchase of LucasFilm, for a rumored $4 billion.
This news is big for Disney, because now they’ll own all the rights for merchandizing and what not, but this is even bigger news because there’s also a supposed Star Wars film in the works for a 2015 release. Nothing has been confirmed as to what kind of film this is, but most are speculating a live-action film without George Lucas at the helm.
I’d love for George Lucas to use this sale as a kick-start for his now-late career, because I’d love to see what the director has up his sleeve that doesn’t involve Jedi Knights or Yoda.
Does this purchase mean a thing to you?
*UPDATE* Lucas released the following statement:
For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.
