Disney has decided to bring back director Joss Whedon to direct the upcoming Avengers sequel, which is due out in summer of 2015.
Disney had a meeting earlier today in which they announced their Q3 earnings to investors and according to /Film that is when they also took the time to confirm the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator’s fate with the company.
I’m not the least bit surprised with this piece of news, because Whedon somehow managed to bring such a large scale film to theaters with very little problems. I still don’t think The Avengers is all that everyone is claiming it to be, but I can certainly see why it is getting such high praise from both audiences and critics.
Up until this point Marvel hasn’t been too big on upping pay scales and bringing back previous directors, outside of Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau, which resulted in a disaster that will hopefully be saved by Shane Black. They let Kenneth Branagh skip out on Thor 2 and Joe Johnston on Captain America 2, but there was no way in hell they’d let go of Whedon and his massive fan base that he’s managed to form with past projects and The Avengers.
I’m not really looking forward to the film just yet, but I’m sure I’ll climb on board sometime between now and its release date.
What are your thoughts on the confirmation?
