As his crime drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara plays in theaters and on demand, writer and director David Lowery is already gearing his attention towards his next project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lowery is set to direct the sci-fi tale To Be Two, an adaptation of a short story To Be Two or Not To Be from the Into the Silent Land: Travels in Neuropsychology collection by Paul Broks. The director is set to reunite with Ain’t Them Bodies Saints star Casey Affleck, who’s set to star and executive produce.
According to the report, the sci-fi project centers on identity and the self. It’s set in a world where teleportation exists. People are scanned and reconstructed atom by atom. The original person is vaporized while the digital person is sent to Mars. The story reportedly focuses on the idea when the teleportation machine malfunctions and doesn’t vaporize the original person. It’s been reported that the tone of the project will be similar to Rian Johnson’s 2012 time traveling film Looper.
To Be Two isn’t the only project that Lowery has lined up. The director was recently hired on by Disney to write a revision of Pete’s Dragon. He also will be directing the legendary Robert Redford in The Old Man and the Gun, which is based on a 2003 article in The New Yorker.
Casey Affleck will next be seen in Scott Cooper’s crime drama Out of the Furnace opposite Christian Bale, Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Sam Shepard, and Willem Dafoe. He also has a role in Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar, which just began filming.
