It appears that Oscar-winning method actor Daniel Day-Lewis is calling it quits. Variety has reported that Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Phantom Thread will be his last film, before hanging up the boots for good.
An official statement from his rep says:
Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.
Woah, what a shocker! Daniel Day-Lewis will no doubt go down as one of the greatest of all-time, as if he isn’t referred as that already. Seriously, the man is one of the last great method actors and one of those actors that will always apply his unique stamp on everything that he touches.
There’s no such thing as a half ass performance and if you don’t believe me then simply look at his expansive resume of films.
My personal favorite Daniel Day-Lewis film is There Will Be Blood. His performance in that film will go down in my book as one of the best of modern times and a perfect example of how to take a character and completely get lost in the performance.
It saddens me knowing that DDL might be done for good, but he’s more than earned it and then some. I wish him the best with whatever he ends up doing and hope that he maybe changes his mind.
What’s your favorite Daniel Day-Lewis film?
