John Wick co-director David Leitch is on a roll. He recently directed John Wick: Chapter 2 with an insane amount of bad ass creativity and he’s got Deadpool 2 coming out next year to remind cinema-goers how to have a little fun.
But before that, he’s got the Charlize Theron-starring Atomic Blonde to drop on us, which is set to hit cinemas this summer.
It’s being described as a female-led John Wick, which I get, but I won’t try to simplify down to. John Wick works wonders because of the awesome action and choreography, but also because of a well-written script that created an entire world of hitmen and mobsters.
It’s expanded on in the sequel, which is even more fun and contains more next-level action.
I’m totally alright with Atomic Blonde coming in and creating something entirely different and exciting, yet still containing that same awesome action, but it NEEDS to have its own story and rules.
The red band trailer is no doubtingly bad ass and full of great shots, but is the material on that same level as John Wick?
Early reviews are saying no. I’m excited for this one regardless, because it still has an incredible amount of potential, but I’m going to hold back on the John Wick comparisons and expectations until I get my own eyeballs on it.
Atomic Blonde was scripted by Kurt Johnstad and based on Anthony Johnson and Sam Hart‘s graphic novel.
