Captain America Takes Friday (Friday Box Office)

In what seems to be a surprise, Captain America: The First Avenger has already knocked down Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 from the box office on Friday. Captain America took in $25.8 million dollars on Friday, which is a little higher than Thor‘s $25.5. 3D accounted for 40 percent of the gross.

Box Office Mojo is projecting Captain America to land around $63 to $68 million for the weekend.

Tumbling 85 percent from last Friday, Harry Potter came in second with $14.6 million. This just proves everyone’s theory on the film being front loaded. Lots of people were saying this one was going to be setting massive records and it did with opening day and weekend, but I’m always more interested in how well a film holds. Avatar didn’t open that high but ended up going on to gross 1 billion dollars. It’s going to be interesting following the numbers for Harry Potter over the next few weeks.

Friends with Benefits came in third place with $6.8 million, which is lower than previous sex buddies comedy, No Strings Attached, which opened on Friday with $7.3 million.

I’m really looking forward to the weekend numbers! I hope Captain America can stay in front the whole weekend and top Harry Potter in its second week! I also really hope Friends with Benefits finds an audience or was hopefully made really cheap. It’s such a great little movie that I fear is going to get buried with all these big summer blockbusters.

Check back on Monday!
