Talks of a follow up to the 2004 film Before Sunset has been rumored and desired for quite sometime. Speculation began last fall during an interview with actor Ethan Hawke when he let it slip that a third film was definitely realistic possibility. Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, and director Richard Linklater have expressed their interest in participating in another ‘Before’ film together, but nothing was set in stone. A few months went by and nothing was revealed until earlier in the summer when, during an interview with Indiewire, Ethan Hawke revealed that a follow-up was going to shoot this summer.
Not a bit of information gestated for months until Greek newspapers reported sightings of Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy filming scenes in Messinia, Greece. After being caught red handed, you have no choice other than to come out and tell the truth but rumors were quickly diminished. Ethan Hawke quickly made a statement that the screenplay was in the process of development.
The truth has now been professed. After months of speculation, the rumors can finally be put to rest. According to Deadline, it has been officially announced that production on a Before Sunset follow-up, officially titled Before Midnight, has wrapped production. “It’s great to be back together again, this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight,” the Oscar nominated trio of Hawke, Delpy, and Linklater said in a statement. You can’t deny the solid effort to keep the production a total secrecy by the cast and crew. Just a month ago, Julie Delpy was asked about when the third film plans to begin production and she responded,”sometime in the next year, year and a half,” because they’re still writing it. ” We were led to believe that the film was only in the very early stages of production, which seemed very plausible because there wasn’t any solid information out there other than just speculation.
Although there is no official plot synopsis yet for Before Midnight, you can bet that the film will focus on the continuous relationship between Jesse and Celine (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy), two long distance lovers, who always find themselves drawn back to one another. I’m a huge fan of both Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. A third film is essential to find out exactly how much the characters have changed in the last nine years of their lives. When Before Sunset arrived to its conclusion, we couldn’t help but feel so much hope for these characters that I think a third film is essential in learning what Celine and Jesse have been up to in the last nine years. It’ll also be interesting how technology will be a factor in the film since there are now countless ways of communication.
Before Midnight is going to be shopped around to distributors at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Soon enough, we’ll find out more details on the film and the official release date. Perhaps we can hope for a 2013 Sundance Film Festival premiere? In the mean time, below is the first official image of the film.
