Sad news today, as Rolling Stone is reporting that rapper Adam Yauch, often better known as MCA of The Beastie Boys, and so much more. Personally, I’m a bigger fan of the films he was releasing as co-founder of Oscilloscope Laboratories, which has released films like We Need To Talk About Kevin, Bellflower, Howl, Flow, Terribly Happy, Exit Through the Gift Shop, and The Messenger. However, I grew up hearing The Beastie Boys on a regular basis, although I was never a huge fan, they were certainly a pioneering group.
Yauch was diagnosed with cancer when a tumor was found on his salivary gland. Recently, he’s been getting even more sick, unable to perform or shoot videos for The Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2, their most recent album. Unfortunately, it seems after 3 years of fighting, he lost the battle to cancer today, according to the release.
Yauch was a big supporter of the Free Tibet movement, organizing the largest benefit concert since Live Aid at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for the Free Tibet movement. Of course, he released numerous platinum albums with The Beastie Boys, their most recent album sold well and got critical acclaim as well. I personally thought it was their best album in years, so it’s unfortunate we’ll never see the original line up perform together again. May Adam Yauch rest in peace.
