Found-footage films haven’t ran their course just yet. Almost every single genre is trying to incorporate the cheaply made use of handheld cameras and POV narrative, but only a select few succeed in making their films better because of the found-footage direction. Last year’s Troll Hunter was an effective mix of found-footage and folktale and the upcoming cop drama End of Watch looks like it might be on to something.
Barry Levinson is trying his hand with the genre and he’s doing so with an outbreak horror film called The Bay. It sounds cheap, but it doesn’t look that bad. The trailer is cut to the horror formula, with jump-scares evenly (and predictably) placed throughout, but I’m totally feeling a Cloverfield vibe on a much smaller scale.
Perhaps this could be that one found-footage film to actually get excited for?
The Bay opens in theaters, VOD and iTunes on November 2nd, 2012.
